When Tom Malvino was a boy he loved hanging out in his dadโ€™s store, Louis George, owned by his father and a good friend. His dad wasnโ€™t just selling menโ€™s formalwear and suits. He also was hanging out with fellow musicians, talking politics, talking sports, living life.

Louis and George were professional musicians who decided to go into business together in 1946. The store began as army surplus in San Francisco, eventually moving into better menswear and then relocating to the Corte Madera Center in 1958. Fast forward 64 years, Tom Malvino is offering a similar experience at Louis Thomas. In his fatherโ€™s spirit, he has carried on the familyโ€™s shop in Corte Madera for more than six decades.

โ€œMy dadโ€™s friends would come into the store,โ€ Tom said. โ€œIt felt like a menโ€™s club. People wouldnโ€™t even buy anything sometimes. They would just come to hang out.โ€

Things are different in some ways now, especially with more modern technology. โ€œBut those memories carry you through,โ€ Tom recalled.

And there are still plenty of nods back to a simpler time.

Tailors still fling tape over their shoulders and measure your suit jacket to your exact specifications. Your tuxedo pant legs still get marked up with chalk before theyโ€™re hemmed to the perfect length. The same cash register from 1952 is still there, and if youโ€™re lucky you can make the list to be invited to their charity golf tournament, now in its 55th year.

And relationships are still keyโ€”and always will be.

โ€œSure, itโ€™s great to make that fabulous sale,โ€ said Tom, who started working at the shop when he was 15, pulling pins out of the carpet. โ€œOr performing a last minute miracle to save a customerโ€™s event.  But what it boils down to is the relationships with the customers that keeps me coming back.โ€

And itโ€™s Tomโ€™s relationships with his multitude of vendors that keep his customers coming back for high-quality, hard-to-find, specialty clothing.

โ€œWeโ€™ve got 50 or 60 vendors who supply this store,โ€ Tom said. โ€œWe can get whatever our customers need, often times calling the manufacturers directly.โ€

Tom is now grooming his daughter, Brianna, to take over the shop if she chooses. She has a โ€œfabulous eyeโ€. and does most of the buying and layout of both stores, Tom said proudly. Tom opened up his second location in Petaluma 23 years ago on Kentucky Street.

โ€œItโ€™s very rare to have a business last this long,โ€ Tom said. โ€œEspecially retail. But you need a good succession plan.โ€

And they do. This is a family affair.

Best CBD Sleep Gummies by Green Unicorn Farms

Sponsored content by Green Unicorn Farms

Bay Area CBD brand, Green Unicorn Farms has come a long way since they first launched onto the CBD market in late 2019. With a newly expanded product line and larger variety of therapeutic ingredients, Green Unicorn Farms wants to empower consumers by helping them find the right CBD for their needs.

In 2021 they snagged their first โ€œBest of Marinโ€ award in the category of โ€œBest Cannabis Labelโ€. This year they repeated the success and won Best of Marin in multiple categories including โ€œBest Hemp CBD Productโ€ and โ€œBest Ediblesโ€, much thanks to their CBD sleep gummies that help promote a deep, restorative and restful sleep using only vegan ingredients.

Earlier this year Green Unicorn Farms was featured in LA Weekly as the best CBD specific sleep gummies of 2022, outperforming some of the biggest brands on the market.

Better CBD products based on customer feedback

Itโ€™s safe to say that Green Unicorn is making quite a splash on the CBD scene so we asked co-founder, Robert Hising, what he attributes their success in the CBD sleep category to. His answer, โ€œWe focus on selling our products direct-to-customer (DTC) via our website instead of relying too heavily on wholesaling to retail stores. By owning the relationship with our customers, we are able to get direct, real-world feedback from the market. We listen closely to our customers and let them get involved in the development of new products.โ€

Robert continues to say, โ€œThe direct-to-consumer model allows us to maintain high quality and standards while keeping costs low in ways that traditional and larger brands just arenโ€™t able to. Thatโ€™s how we can make clean, safe, reliable, and effective products that are affordable and accessible for everyone.โ€

More than just CBD

In their quest to provide the most effective products on the market, Green Unicorn Farms are also venturing into the world of medicinal mushrooms and are creating special terpene blends to enhance specific symptom-relief, tailored to their customers needs. Each unique formula pairs the powers of traditional medicine with modern science to help people feel more balanced, happy, and symptom-free.And with todayโ€™s busy and stressful lifestyle, Green Unicorn Farmsโ€™ goal is to make your CBD shopping experience as effortless as possible. Simply choose the effects you want from your CBD (sleep, balance, energy), and then choose your preferred delivery method (gummies, tinctures, flowers or creams). All products are shipped straight to your door using USPS. Itโ€™s that easy!

The Secret to Il Davideโ€™s Enduring Success

Sponsored Content From Weeklys Studio

Most restaurants donโ€™t even make it past the first year. Il Davide has beaten those odds by a long shot.

Chef/owner David Haydon, 58, has proudly run his San Rafael Italian restaurant since 1995. And itโ€™s only getting better.

โ€œThe secret?โ€ he said. โ€œConsistency. You need good food and then you need to make it consistently. You donโ€™t want to come to a restaurant you love and then have your food be different each time you come.โ€

For example, his pasta maker has been making pasta for years and has become a master of his craft.

Haydonโ€™s niche is taking classic dishes and playing with themโ€”except for veal piccata.

โ€œYou just canโ€™t tweak that,โ€ he said.

Take for example Davidโ€™s version of Chicken Parmesan. He fries organic chicken breast and seasons it with toasted pumpkin seeds, panko, cayenne and then serves the dish in a bowl with kale, basil, mozzarella and torchio pasta. โ€œItโ€™s spicy and sweet and crunchy,โ€ he explained.

Il Davide also plays with another slightly tweaked classic dish: A garlic-infused mushroom leek tart. The crust is sweet, not savory. And it came about because one of his cooks accidentally used sugar one time instead of salt. โ€œBut it was really good,โ€ he recalled. โ€œAnd I kept it like that. Itโ€™s absolutely delicious.โ€

Speaking of staff, thatโ€™s Il Davideโ€™s other secret to success. The people who have worked with David have been with him for years, if not decades.

โ€œWe really give everything the personal touch,โ€ he said. โ€œI never wanted to be a corporate restaurant. Our staff has fun. We have this good energy and vibe.โ€

And that good energy permeates Il Davideโ€™s loyal customers.

entree wine el davide restaurant san rafael ca

โ€œOne guy comes in here every day,โ€ David said. โ€œEvery single day. He gets to-go food and has a drink at the wine bar. Another lady buys enough food to last her through the Monday that weโ€™re closed.โ€

And during the pandemic, when the restaurant was closed for a few months and then started offering take-out only, David said his customers stepped up to show their love.

One man left a $2,000 tip when he ordered his to-go food, which he wanted to be shared among the employees. Other people left $100 tips like it was nothing.

David is likely so loved because he gives back to the community that he lives in and cares about. He is a regular contributor to local schools and churches, donating his meals for good causes. Two of his biggest recipients are San Rafael High School, where all three of his stepchildren attended, and 100Marin, a group of philanthropists who raise money for other Marin County nonprofits. In fact, his efforts won him San Rafael Citizen of the Year in 2016.

During his off hours, he can often be found hiking in the hills above Terra Linda, skiing in Tahoe or working out in his tricked-out gym at his San Rafael home, which he shares with his wife, Ellen Haydon, who used to work with him catering weddings before she became a nurse.

Davidโ€™s love of cooking came to him when he was 15. He started a job as a dishwasher at a restaurant his friendโ€™s father owned. And he quickly got hooked on the adrenaline rush of creating 200 meals all at once. โ€œI found that fascinating,โ€ he said.

It also didnโ€™t hurt that neither his mother nor his father cooked very well. (His father โ€œmurderedโ€ steaks, David recalled.) And he wanted to be able to eat good food. So he learned himself.

As David looks back on his three decades of serving that good food, heโ€™s got no regrets.

โ€œA lot of restaurants are really good but weโ€™re on peopleโ€™s minds,โ€ he said. โ€œWe are so established. When you think Italian, you think us.โ€

Best Glow-in-the-Dark Collar for your Pooch

When you get right down to the nuts and bolts of hardware stores, they are utterly fascinating.

Every trip is an adventure, maybe the adult version of Disney World. Personally, I lose track of time while meandering through the aisles. Only a rare breed, contractors mostly, can stride purposefully into a hardware store and go immediately to the item they need.

I venture to guess a big box store has millions of pieces of inventory out on the floor. The small neighborhood shop probably has thousands. And who knows the purpose of all that stuff?

One of my favorite finds at a hardware store was glow-in-the-dark duct tape. The boring gray duct tape was a brilliant invention, but this fluorescent version is downright genius. I put it on my poochโ€™s collar and I can now spot him while heโ€™s darting all over the Sausalito dog park at night.

Etsy, the online store known for selling handmade and vintage goods, even has a hardware section with almost 5,000 items. I havenโ€™t spent much time perusing it because my shopping cart would runneth over.

Iโ€™m not a DIY person, yet Iโ€™ve spent a small fortune at hardware stores since I moved into my tiny abode. The itsy-bitsy screw that holds the dryerโ€™s lint filter in place disappeared. The pulls on the kitchen cabinets were outdated. No matter how hard I scrubbed the grout on my bathroom floor, it wouldnโ€™t turn white again. In one trip to a local hardware store, I solved the dayโ€™s pressing problems. A teeny screw, a set of screwdrivers, designer-looking cabinet pulls at a bargain price and something I never even knew existedโ€”a grout paint pen. The list of purchases goes on and on.

Actually, perhaps Iโ€™m a DIYer after all. Yes, I am. And I owe it all to the sage counsel of the hardware store clerks who know where each little gem is located and how to use it.

Best Place for Some Summer Shade

While you’re out and about looking for somewhere to endure the next inevitable heatwave this summer, consider making Old Mill Park in Mill Valley that much sought-after refuge.

Fairy tales, books, films and other media generally present a sanctuary as a serene, quiet place that shelters occupants from the turmoils of the outside world with a kind of amniotic tranquility. Old Mill Park is no different.

Setting that overly poetic preamble aside for the moment, it really does fit the bill. It’s just as at home in a day-dream as it would be on a postcard, with a softly lapping stream that meanders through its center, imposing redwood trees that loom overhead and a quaint hilltop garden welcoming visitors. On a clear day, the warm sunlight that cuts through the canopy does so in picturesque columns in the otherwise shaded wood. They’re the kinds of things that pull any painting of a fantastical landscape together, looking like Narnia in summer.

Actually, just do that. Imagine the impeccable nature of the Kingdom of Aslan that is Narnia (post-witch), and you’ll be surprisingly close.

There’s a modest amphitheater you and the family can use to perform a few of Shakespeareโ€™s sonnets or one of your own homebrewed plays. Dotted plentifully throughout the park are picnic benches that make for great lunch spots with loved ones. Cozy tree hollows act as private reading nooks where the responsibilities of adult life can’t find you. There are even a bridge or two to enjoy crossing.

So whether it’s a solo get-away for one’s own sake, a day out with a significant other and any little ones, or just looking for something to do, Old Mill Park, located at 64 Cascade Dr., Mill Valley, is a wonderful place for any of it.

Best Place to Recharge Your Life Force

Cavallo Point Healing Arts Center and Spa is a spectacular space. Nestled just north of San Francisco, Cavallo Point is a lush, green, classic California destination. So, for those looking to enjoy a day of pampering and self-care in an inimitable geography, the search is over.

The spa treatments are not to be missed, but I particularly appreciate the healing arts menu, which includes herbal treatments, energy work, cacao ceremonies, sound baths and reiki. Reiki, for those who donโ€™t know, is a Japanese form of energy healing which, through the palms, transfers energy to the recipient. The name Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei meaning โ€œGod’s wisdom or the higher powerโ€ and Ki meaning โ€œlife force energy.โ€

While I can appreciate the value of Western medicine, I often find it falls short. Reiki has been pivotal at different moments in my life, helping to rebalance and unblock my bodyโ€™s natural energy channels. Cavallo Point Healing Arts Center and Spa, located at 601 Murray Cir., Fort Baker, offers a combination treatment of reiki with massage, which is by far my favorite option.

The dual treatment of massage to physically work out blockages and reiki to restore life energy flow leaves me feeling refreshed and renewed. Itโ€™s much like the feeling one gets after swimming in cool water and laying to dry in the sun.

Best Pre-Yoga Edible

After my initial stoner phase from 17 to 19, I took a break from weed, except during moments of grief or stress, when I would use it to help me gain clarity around a painful situation, or a sense of groundedness in my body.

I began to understand cannabis as something other than a frat party amplifierโ€”I attended too many UC Berkeley fraternity parties in my later youthโ€”and more as something that could help me better understand myself.

Even so, it was still several years after that realization when I began to understand the nuances of the plant and how different strains, ingested in different ways, could serve myriad purposes. In 2020, I began to investigate in more earnestness, and just this year I discovered the Kiva Camino Sours, my favorite edible to date.

For those looking for a slower release, more escalator-style high, with a balanced THC:CBD blend so things donโ€™t get too looseโ€”too much THC can send me to outer space if Iโ€™m not carefulโ€”Caminos are the answer. Theyโ€™re subtle and supportive: perfect just before a yoga session. I recommend a Camino, 60 minutes on the mat while listening to the Welcome Home album by Shrimpnose and a salt bath. Tension you didnโ€™t know you were carrying will unravel.

Kiva is a Bay Area company founded in 2010 by awesome cannabis-forward couple Scott and Kristi Palmer. Their love of quality cannabis products has turned them into the number one edibles brand in the country. So itโ€™s not just my preference. These are the gummies you want.

Best Place to Become One with The Force

Conventional wisdom tells us not to meet our heroes, as they’ll often fail to meet the standard set by our expectations. So, if you’re a sensible adult who grew up admiring the peerless insight of Jedi master Yoda and the intrepid daring of Indiana Jones, you’re very much in luck.

Imagination Park in San Anselmo, right around the corner from town hall, is home to two bronze statues of the pair of praiseworthy paragons. They won’t get your name wrong, have a poor sense of humor or turn out to have an annoying laugh. It’s the perfect meet-and-greet!

Mostly, if you have a creative spirit in need of nourishing, it’s a fine place to meditate on the idea that George Lucas conceived both characters in the same little town where you now stand. Maybe one day you can have your own bronze statues dedicated to awesome brain children you created!

Best Artsy House and Gallery Space

There are many spectacular stopping points in Marin Countyโ€”this place, with its rolling gold hills, sparkling blue waters and rambling green oak trees, attracts human brilliance of all kinds.

One such a wonder was the late JB (James Blain) Blunk, a sculptor originally from Kansas who built and lived in a home in Inverness until his death in 2002.

Blunkโ€™s work is a harmonious interaction between human and nature. His most well-known work, The Planet, is carved from a single redwood root system and can be found at the Oakland Museum of California.

Blunkโ€™s legacy is honored by the Blunk Space, a research center and exhibition space dedicated to perpetuating Blunkโ€™s artistic mission. The space is a hub of contemporary art and is located at 11101 CA-1, #105, Point Reyes Station.

The house, a redwood and riverstone liveable art space which can be viewed by appointment, is something every local and visitor should experience. There is a peace amongst the natural texture of the house; each feature is so tenderly and intuitively shaped, it would seem nature intended it so. A tranquility not easily located in todayโ€™s world can be found here.

When next in Point Reyes, stop in to Blunk Space to view the current exhibition, have a coffee and freshly baked pastry across the street at Tobyโ€™s Coffee Bar, and view the house, if youโ€™ve planned ahead.

Youโ€™ve Already Made It, Marin

Twenty-two years ago, I had one of the bestโ€”then worstโ€”ideas to ever occur to my younger mind: Sublet an ADU on the side of Mt. Tamalpais for the spring preceding a permanent move to Los Angeles.

I somehow thought that briefly steeping in such a bucolic setting would stoke up my spiritual constitution before venturing into Hollywoodโ€™s concrete jungle seeking fame and fortune. And I was right, which is what made the whole misadventure so wrong.

Whereas I was once on Mt. Tam, 2,600 feet above sea level, cushioned in coastal fog, dreams intact, in LA, I had sunk into a veritable psychic sewer in the depths of an underpass that connected the dreaded 405 and 10 freeways as I broiled in a second-hand Honda while it sputtered out the last of the ACโ€™s freon charge. I was no longer Daedalus, but Tantalus, reaching toward the cool waters of Muir Beach that now receded far into the corners of memory and my longing to return overflowed.

If only I had stayed in Marin, on the mountain, I wouldโ€™ve been far above the fray, safe from the squalid human zoo of wannabes and malcontents, I wouldโ€™ve been, dare I say, happy. Or at least happier. It was then that I vowed to come back to Marin County. I took yearsโ€”years that I couldโ€™ve spent shrouded in Tamโ€™s mystic marine layer instead of steaming in the bowels of an urban nightmare.

Citizens of Marin, learn from my experience and heed my words: Donโ€™t leave Marin County! Youโ€™ve already made it! By merely living here in Marin, youโ€™ve won the game of life. To the victor go the spoils! What follows is but a brief catalog of all that is yours.

This annual Best of Marin issue incorporates contributions from you, our readers, as well as a talented cadre of writers: Isabella Cook, Evan Davis, Mark Fernquest, Brooke Herron, Nikki Silverstein and Jane Vick.
Also, a hat tip to news editor Will Carruthers, who guided this edition of the Pacific Sun to safe harbor while his boss once again was lured by the siren call of cinema (and was conveniently filming on location during its production cycle). Enjoy!
