Sellout: The Disastrous Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska

0

Donald Trump emerged from a much shorter meeting than expected with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage to say there was โ€œno dealโ€ but an โ€œextremely productiveโ€ meeting in which โ€œmany pointsโ€ were agreed to. What points?

What was true before the Trump-Putin meeting remains true today: Putin has often stated his ambition to subordinate and eventually take over all of Ukraine, and Trump has failed to hold Russia to account for any of its actions in the country.

Here are my conclusions about the Alaska meeting:

First, it was a disaster for Trump. He got played; his effort to flatter Putin with the location and the optics failed. Second, Putin was given no incentive to stop his war. To the contrary, Trump gave him every incentive to keep fightingโ€”no demands of any kind, and no leverage, such as tariffs or sanctionsโ€”to make Putin stop and think. As former secretary of state Susan Rice said on MSNBC, Trump โ€œlet Putin out of the penalty box.โ€

Third, Ukraine is put in a very difficult position, though it has the backing of European leaders. Trump has abandoned any U.S. role in defense of Ukraine, leaving it to the other NATO members to provide military support.

The next Trump-Putin meeting, with Zelensky in attendance, is slated to aim at a deal over Ukraineโ€™s territory. Trump said as much when he told Fox News Radio prior to the Alaska summit: โ€œThe second meeting is going to be very, very important because thatโ€™s going to be a meeting where they [Putin and Zelensky] make a deal. And I donโ€™t want to use the word โ€˜divvyโ€™ things up. But you know, to a certain extent, itโ€™s not a bad term, OK?โ€

Imagine the scene: Trump accepts Putinโ€™s invitation to hold the next meeting in Moscow, at which Zelensky is put in the position by Trump of either agreeing to Putinโ€™s territorial demands or face further destruction of Ukraine. Itโ€™s a sellout of an independent country by a U.S. president who believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Words & Curds, Bonnie Kaufman of Marin French Cheese Company

Bonnie Kaufman had big plans of moving across the country to New York City after college to become a fiction editor.

But as it will, San Francisco stole her heart, and she made a life here in the Bay Area instead. While that editorial career still had its grasp (Kaufman worked at a non-fiction publishing company for a spell), something even more powerful took hold of Kaufmanโ€™s life pathโ€”cheese.

Today, she is brand manager of Marin French Cheese Company.

Amber Turpin: How did you get into this work?

Bonnie Kaufman: I had always loved eating cheese, and once I moved to the city I started shopping at the different markets and specialty shops. As I dove into my โ€˜research,โ€™ my eyes were opened to the world of cheeseโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve worked behind the counter as a cheesemonger and store buyer, hosted private tastings and events, worked with chefs as a distributor representative and, finally, landed at Marin French Cheese Company about five years ago.

Did you ever have an โ€˜ahaโ€™ moment with a certain beverage? If so, tell us about it.

I am a coffee lover and an iced coffee fanatic. I donโ€™t drink alcohol anymore, but when I did, I would seek out coffee and coffee liqueur-based cocktails. Iโ€™ve had so many coffee cocktails all over the Bay Area, but for too long I hadnโ€™t gone to the quintessential SF spot: The Buena Vista. When I finally went, I sat alone at the counter and had two Irish coffees in a rowโ€”I would have had a third, but I wasnโ€™t sure Iโ€™d make it home safely.

What is your favorite thing to drink at home?

It is a BIG DEAL that my husband and I purchased an espresso machine earlier this year โ€ฆ and weโ€™ve had a fun time playing with and comparing espresso beans from local roasters. There are many wonderful options, but we keep coming back to Nova Rosti and Red Whale, both made in San Rafael.

Where do you like to go out for a drink?

Since Iโ€™m not looking to get a buzz from alcohol these days, Iโ€™m all about ambience and experience. Luckily, I live in downtown San Rafael, so there are some wonderful spots within walking distanceโ€ฆ We can all always agree on Cali Gold, where they have craft beer and cocktails, and theyโ€™re always game to make a custom mocktail.

My neighborhood friends prefer a more rustic and divey experience, so for that weโ€™ll head to the Log Cabin Dugout Bar in San Anselmo. Last but not least, I have to mention Stillwater in Fairfax.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you want to be drinking (besides fresh water)?

Seems logistically challenging, but of course my answer is some sort of iced coffee. In the absence of ice, Iโ€™ll settle for warm grapefruit soda.Marin French Cheese Company Shop, 7510 Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Rd., Petaluma, 707.762.6001. marinfrenchcheese.com.

Groovy Gravitas: The Heavy Heavy at Hopmonk

0

One may want to turn on The Heavy Heavyโ€™s recently released, rollicking concert album, Live, and crank it up to 11. Or better yet, see them live this Friday, Aug. 22 at HopMonk Tavern Novato.

Though the U.K. rockers wear many of their influences on their sleeves, the first to surface are not David Bowie and Marty McFly.

These heroes of pop culture are important to the bandโ€™s moniker. But โ€œto me now, it represents the feeling after youโ€™ve had a rather big night partying, and you see your friend for the first time in the morning,โ€ said multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Will Turner in an early August interview. He asks, โ€œโ€˜How are you doing?โ€™ And you say, โ€˜That was heavy heavy, man.โ€™ And that smile you have just after saying it, thatโ€™s what weโ€™re about.โ€

Singer and keyboardist Georgie Fuller laughed in agreement before the pair of Brighton-based rock โ€™nโ€™ roll aficionados delved more deeply into the inspirations that are readily apparent in their brand of blues rock. Theyโ€™re proudly โ€œmaking the music the โ€™60s forgot,โ€ according to a band bio.

The Heavy Heavy also draws from Dire Straits, the โ€™90s Britpop of The Stone Roses, Blur, Oasis and Primal Scream and American duos like The White Stripes and The Black Keys (who theyโ€™ve shared bills with: Itโ€™s โ€œa real cool thingโ€ to tour with a band โ€œweโ€™ve really grown up idolizing,โ€ Turner said).

Itโ€™s all โ€œrooted in that โ€™60s guitar band style,โ€ Turner noted, referring to the sound heโ€™s been honing for a decade and a half. โ€œWeโ€™re taking a bit of our parentsโ€™ music as well as our adolescence and throwing that together in a big melting pot.โ€

Fuller is a classically trained singer and has a degree in acting. As she was wrapping up her studies, Turner got her to sing on some song demos he was making. It was kismet since it started something new.

โ€œAnd then there was an EP out of nowhere,โ€ Turner said.

The group, which is now a five piece, self-released said EP, Life and Only Life, in 2020. It was full of warm organ sounds and catchy guitar riffs, rich in vocal harmonies and summery vibes while pulling from โ€™60s folk-blues artists Delaney & Bonnie and Peter Greenโ€™s era of Fleetwood Mac.

If the EP was folk rock, the full-length debut album, 2024โ€™s One Of A Kind, was when the band went electric. It shows the pairโ€™s sharper blues rock chops, but still doesnโ€™t wholly encapsulate who the nascent artists are or where theyโ€™re going. Enter the new release, Live, which displays how The Heavy Heavyโ€™s live show โ€œis definitely a whole other beast than the records,โ€ Turner said. โ€œDeliberately, we try and create an experience which is worth seeing in the room.โ€

โ€œWe record every single show, so Iโ€™ve got everything backed up,โ€ he continued. โ€œAnd we just thought, โ€˜Why not do it between albums? Itโ€™s all there recorded.โ€™ And then we had the idea to extend that whole ideaโ€ฆ โ€˜Why donโ€™t we have one side in the studio and one side on the road?โ€™โ€

As for Bowie, Turner said he and Fuller first heard the bandโ€™s namesake phrase when he gave an interview to the BBC in the early โ€™70s. When asked about the sound of his new record, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Bowie responded: โ€œItโ€™s heavy heavy, man.โ€

With The Heavy Heavy, the feeling is palpable.

8pm, Friday, Aug. 22, at HopMonk Tavern Novato, Session Room, 224 Vintage Way. Tix are $36.79. hopmonk.com/novato.

Best Way to Wait for a Drink While Dining Outdoors

I get it. Joints get busy. Especially those with such a stellar bayside view as Samโ€™s Anchor Cafe in Tiburonโ€”the very place I interviewed for this editorship, oh-so-many years ago.

The interview portion of said interview went swimmingly and was wrapped before I passed the foyer. The drinking portion, however, continued on the outdoor patio. And its memory kindled in me a desire to revisit it on the occasion of our readers voting it โ€œBest Outdoor Dining,โ€ in our restaurants category.

True. It starts with a view of the San Francisco skylineโ€”from the Bay Bridge to the western edge of Crissy Field. Of course, from this vantage, the skyscrapers are competing with the masts of boats bobbing in Tiburonโ€™s marina. Even better. Iโ€™d toast it, butโ€ฆ

โ€œYou gotta try the mai-tais,โ€ exclaimed a woman in her 60s who was celebrating her โ€œ21st birthday,โ€ according to a jocular observation made by a man at another table, who offered, โ€œThe margaritas are pretty good.โ€

Frankly, all the drinks looked good. Which is why I really wish I had one. But first, the menu, which is topped by Samโ€™s Spiked Slushiesโ€”a self-explanatory slide off of Memory Lane, I surmised. The cocktail listโ€”smart. The beer listโ€”smarter. The wine listโ€”as smart and bigger than both. But waitโ€”there was something else, something I had to experience during my tenure as a professionalโ€”pick oneโ€”journo/drunk/both.

Bowls. This may be a new concept to some: The bowl is recommended for parties of two or more who intend to spend the day imbibing. Think โ€œpunch bowlโ€ but with less fisticuffs. On offer were bowls of Aperol Spritz, a couple of Samโ€™s branded offerings (pink lemonade and sangria), the aforementioned margaritas and something called a Hermosa Picante, which is comprised of tequila, cointreau, jalapeno, lime, agave and cilantro (a convenient way to get heartburn and a headache in one go).

But I would never know. In the time I was seated in the midst of Marinโ€™s Best Outdoor Dining spot, nary a server came my way.

Perhaps it was because I had announced myself as an accredited member of the media. Perhaps itโ€™s Gen Xโ€™s lot in life. Perhaps, they were just busy.

As the old dude said to the celebrating sexagenarian: โ€œBe safeโ€”donโ€™t forget about the Uber!โ€

A thing devoutly to be wished.
