‘Leili & Majnun,’ an Ancient Arab Fable in Richmond

Why should Marinites make the effort to attend a performance of Torange Yeghiazarian’s Leili & Majnun, now running at Central Stage in Richmond through Nov. 23?

One, the Richmond Bridge is cheaper and less tourist-filled than the Golden Gate. Two, there’s a parking lot with ample parking. Yep, no paying more for parking than for dinner or circling the block in ever-widening circles, until out of sheer frustration, one convinces themself that they will fit in a space that would make a Smart Car sweat. Third, and most importantly, the play is very good.

If one missed the staged reading of this play at Marin Shakes during their Seeds of Time Festival, Leili & Majnun tells legendary Persian poet Nizami’s version of the star-crossed lovers’ tale that may well have inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Leili (Yasaman Asgari) falls in love with Majnun (Roeen Nooran) at school. However, they love each other too much, so Leili’s mother (Sofia Ahmad) pulls Leili out of school, refusing to allow Leili to marry Majnun, despite his father (Behzad Golemohammadi) offering riches. Along the way to the inevitable end, there are festivals, battles, poetry and songs.

Original music composed by Sirvan Manhoobi (except for the “Love Letters Duet,” composed by Adrienne Shamszad) beautifully advances the story. Music direction and performance by Sara Saberi are necessarily excellent given that there are only two musicians, and they are right on the small stage with the actors. Saberi also composed some of the transition music.

Production design by Mokhtar Paki is simple yet multi-purpose, allowing the actors to play with the set without detracting from the story.

The seven actors play off of each other like old friends. All of them give solid performances, but it is Dina Zarif who shines throughout. Despite most of her lines being in Persian, her clarity, energy and strength allow the audience to feel included in the story even before the English translations are given.

While Nooran and Asgari give strong performances throughout, their “Love Letters Duet” is simply breathtaking. It is rare to find artists who can sing and act with the same skill; both Nooran and Asgari are part of that small circle.

In fact, the biggest disappointment of this show is that these actors are not known names in Marin. Yeghiazarian has pulled together a multi-talented cast to tell a story that transcends language while still being strongly rooted in a culture too rarely showcased on Bay Area stages.

In reality, the beauty of this show alone is reason enough to cross the bay.‘Leili and Majnun’ runs through Nov. 23 at Central Stage, 5221 Central Ave., Richmond. Wed–Sat, 8pm; Sun, 3pm. $30. 510.610.9146. centralstage.org.

Frame Running: Athletic Club Launches for People with Mobility Challenges

As the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles gears up to debut frame running, a Marin club has launched to introduce people with mobility challenges to the fun sport.

Frame runners use a three-wheeled, pedal-less frame with a chest plate, saddle and handlebars, a design that supports an individual with orthopedic impairments while they run on their own, something they may never have done before. The equipment allows an athlete to push their body against the frame, propel forward using their legs and feet, and steer with their hands or arms.

Hosted by San Rafael’s BOOST School, an educational program for children and young adults with motor disabilities, the monthly Frame Running Club gives people of all ages and skill levels access to the equipment. The club encourages folks to get behind the handlebars of a frame runner and feel the freedom that running provides.

“My kiddos used a frame runner for the Bay to Breakers Race in San Francisco, and that was a lot of fun,” said Saskia Kramer Wong, BOOST School’s director and certified frame running coach. “My father-in-law, who is 82, and his balance is a little bit off, got on a frame runner. The equipment isn’t fancy or stigmatizing—it’s for everyone.”

Alejandro Guerrero, 12, who has cerebral palsy, got his own frame runner three years ago and runs three times a week. He always has a big smile on his face while running, his parents said.

“It’s one of the few exercises that gives him a good cardio workout,” said Alejandro’s father, David Guerrero. “He’s been able to race against other kids, which is something that he would not get to try otherwise. When you have a child with cerebral palsy, you learn that you need equipment and technology to help your kid experience the world.”

The physical benefits of frame running include building strength, endurance, core stability, balance, coordination and cardiovascular fitness, according to Kramer Wong. It also boosts confidence and fosters inclusion.

Developed by two athletes with mobility challenges, frame running began in Denmark in the early ’90s. Quickly growing in popularity, the sport provides recreational enjoyment for some and a chance to compete for others. Frame running is completely adaptive, with equipment and coaching tailored to the individual athlete’s needs.

The Frame Running Club’s next meetup is at 10am on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the BOOST School in San Rafael. Everyone is welcome, and the event is free. For more information, email sk*****@***nb.org.

Jewish Music Class Features Rock and Pop Trivia

Marin’s trivia master takes a deep dive into the contributions of Jewish artists to the rock and pop music scene, creating a captivating community class from fascinating little-known facts.

Howard Rachelson, the Pacific Sun’s Trivia Café writer, designed his College of Marin community education class for music lovers of all backgrounds. The course, Journey Through Jewish Music: Pop and Rock Stars, 1950s to Today, focuses on recent genres, but Rachelson also touches on how they were influenced by immigration and Yiddish theater in America.

“Everybody likes rock ’n’ roll and pop music,” Rachelson said. “I thought this class would appeal to a lot of people, whether they’re Jewish or not. Not everyone knows that Pink is Jewish and that Neil Sedaka recorded in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Yiddish and Hebrew. There are so many interesting facts out there. And I tried to tell it as a story that you might see on TV.”

I took an abbreviated version of the multi-media class in Rachelson’s living room last weekend and was spellbound by the upbeat music, videos and trivia he shared. Now, it should be said that he has a liberal view on who is Jewish and who is not—if a musical artist has any Jewish ancestry, they qualify.

That definition includes Elvis Presley, whose mother has both a cross and Jewish star on her gravestone. And the King of Rock ’n’ Roll himself wore a chai, the Hebrew symbol for life, on a necklace.

Gene Simmons, the Israeli-born lead singer of the iconic rock band Kiss, changed his name from Chaim Witz when he got into the music business. The grandson of a rabbi, Leonard Cohen’s music incorporates religion, as evidenced by the hymn “Hallelujah” and “Who by Fire,” which evokes the theme of Yom Kippur.

The Jewish folk song, “Hava Nagila,” sung at almost every Jewish wedding, includes a rendition by Harry Belafonte. Yes, you guessed it—the Calypso King also has Jewish DNA through his grandfather on his father’s side, Rachelson said.

Before I give away all of Rachelson’s information cornucopia, let’s delve into why he developed the three-class program that starts this week at College of Marin. For years, he played the keyboard in an ensemble with two guitarists, performing all over the Bay Area in a show they called “Journey Through Jewish Music.” That gave him the idea to combine his love of music and trivia, giving birth to the fun class of the same name.

Rachelson’s rollicking rock and pop course is a subset of a much larger curriculum. Extensive research led him to the first example of Jewish music.

“I started with the earliest Jewish musician I could think of—King David, a singer-songwriter,” Rachelson said. “He played the lyre, which is a form of a harp. And he wrote lyrics. In fact, psalms are songs. ‘The Lord is my shepherd’ and so on.”

Jumping forward, Rachelson cites Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” as “the greatest song ever written.” A section of the class on Simon & Garfunkel highlights the duo’s beginning, when they performed as Tom & Jerry, and their subsequent conflicts and break-up.

Carol King’s vast songwriting and singing career makes its way into the curriculum, as does Billy Joel’s wildly successful music and Amy Winehouse’s unique sound. Call it a Jewish journey or a musical history; everyone will learn more than a few things of interest from Rachelson.

‘Journey Through Jewish Music’ has no prerequisites except a love for music. Class starts on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at College of Marin’s Kentfield campus. For more information and to register, visit marin.edu/communityed.

Teen Driver Charged in Fatal Crash, Questions Emerge

Marin County District Attorney Lori Frugoli filed a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge against a 17-year-old girl for the April auto accident in West Marin that resulted in the death of four teens.

Another young passenger had minor injuries, with the driver suffering serious burns, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicular manslaughter charge, filed without gross negligence, followed the CHP’s release of a report by its accident investigative team that determined speeding caused the crash. While the investigation concluded that the then-16-year-old girl was driving 20 to 25 miles per hour over the 40 mph speed limit when the Volkswagen Tiguan went off San Geronimo Valley Drive in Woodacre, hit a tree and caught fire, the agency’s report raises some critical questions.

A key component to the report’s conclusions is how the CHP determined the sport utility vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash on the rural road. Because the vehicle’s data recorder, commonly referred to as “the black box,” sustained significant damage, it retained no data, the report said. The CHP’s investigation then focused on the “frozen” or stuck speedometer and tachometer needles, relying on those readings to peg the pre-impact vehicle speed at 60-65 miles per hour.

Yet the information that the CHP relied upon to reach this conclusion could be faulty, according to years-long research into using frozen speedometer readings for collision reconstruction. The CHP based their findings on a 2017 peer-reviewed paper, “Speedometers and Collision Reconstruction,” authored by Christopher H. Goddard and David Price and published by SAE International—formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Citing the 2017 SAE International paper, the CHP concluded that the accident details and the type of speedometer in the VW Tiguan met with the criteria to provide “a level of confidence in accepting the residual readings.” Interestingly, this same technical paper also states that damaged instrument panels should not be considered reliable when determining speed.

The Pacific Sun obtained the 2017 paper and a subsequent 2022 SAE paper, “Validation of Frozen Speedometer Readings Against EDR Data,” by Christopher H. Goddard and Steve Anderson. EDR refers to “event data recorder,” the technical term for a black box.

The CHP’s investigation seemingly disregarded aspects of the 2017 paper—repeated in the 2022 study—that indicated the unreliability of the speedometer and tachometer readings with a damaged instrument panel. Some of the factors delineated in the papers include damage to the instrument cover or needle, as well as debris between the dial face and needle. The paper also cautioned that when a vehicle leaves the roadway before a collision, the readings could change.

Indeed, these factors were present in the 2019 VW Tiguan after the accident, according to the CHP’s report, which states the following: The instrument panel’s “front plastic had melted during the fire that occurred immediately after the crash.” The speedometer had a bent needle. The tachometer needle melted to the front plastic and was accidentally removed during the investigation. The background of the instrument panel’s gauges were covered in soot. And the vehicle left the road before hitting the tree.

The report gave no explanation for why the CHP used the damaged instruments in its crash analysis. Rather, it fixated on the reliability of frozen readings with the type of motors in the Tiguan’s instruments and that the gauge needles did not appear to have moved during the transport and removal of the instruments. The SAE’s two technical papers also focus on these points—but only after warning that instrument damage throws out the reliability of frozen instrument readings.

Photos in the CHP report show the blackened, crumpled remains of the SUV and close-up shots of the damaged instruments. One picture shows the significant right bend in the speedometer needle, which ultimately points to the 65-mph mark. Another shows text over a photo indicating the missing tachometer needle was stuck between 3,000 to 3,250 RPMs before it was inadvertently removed.

Investigators also used a scientific equation involving the tachometer reading to ascertain the SUV’s speed. The result supported the agency’s conclusion that the vehicle reached 60-65 mph before “immediate power loss” at the time of the impact.

“The analysis indicates the most likely scenario was that the VW Tiguan was in 5th gear at the time the vehicle lost power, and the tach was stuck in place. This analysis shows that the speed on the speedometer was consistent with what the engine was able to produce at the displayed RPM range,” the report stated.

But the calculations and analyses never consider the damage to the instruments, including the tachometer needle melting to its plastic cover or the bent speedometer. The CHP report also rejected the surviving passenger’s statement that a car had veered into the Tiguan’s lane, and the teen driver swerved to avoid it.

These points may surface in the upcoming months as the court case moves forward. The first proceeding took place in juvenile court on Oct. 22.

The youth sat beside her attorney and parents as the charges were read by Marin County Superior Court Judge James Chou. A misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence charge carries a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail.

The DA also filed two infractions—traffic tickets—against the girl, one for speeding and the other for violating her provisional license by transporting passengers under the age 20 without a parent or licensed driver over 25 in the car.

Both deputy district attorney Cassandra Edwards and defense attorney Charles Dresow requested that the judge close the court proceedings to the public because the defendant is a juvenile. The harm to the minors involved outweighs the public’s interest due to the gravity of the case, argued Edwards.

“We’ll be discussing the deaths of four young women,” Dresow said.

The judge was not swayed. Chou cited a juvenile statute that keeps the court proceedings open to the public for certain offenses, including manslaughter. However, he stated that if the attorneys could cite applicable case law, he is open to being persuaded to close the courtroom.

“The District Attorney is in the process of petitioning the Juvenile Court to reconsider its position,” DA Frugoli said in a statement.

The fatal crash occurred on April 18 in the early evening when the teen was driving with her five friends to a sleepover in Woodacre. The six girls, ranging in age at the time from 14 to 16, attended Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo.

Sienna Katz, 15; Ada Kepley, 15; Olive Koren, 14; and Josalynn Osborn, 15, died in the accident.

The defendant is expected to enter a plea during the next court date on Dec. 3.

Dirt to Dirt, an Entrepreneur Touts ‘Ecological Burial’

As a ghoulish hypothetical, if one were to place an unembalmed body in a concrete casket, and allowed the process of natural decomposition to work unimpeded by chemical preservatives, what would they then find?

They would find nothing but rich soil. Whatever its humbling poetic truth, our natural cycle is not from ashes to ashes, but from soil to soil—for in literal truth we (and all species) are the living earth.

That staggering truth was related to me by Britta Leigh Baskerville, fashion model, mom, soil scientist, composter and natural burial advocate. Baskerville was relating to me the commercial process of a Nevada state “green mortuary,” that she takes as an example to copy here. They add some straw (dead plants) to the casket to improve the fiber content of our soil, and they discreetly remove and grind our rock-like bones before restoring them to the reusable casket—as dust.

I had sought out Baskerville, because of two major pieces of pandemic-era California legislation regarding organizing new industries on our native soil. The first, CA Senate Bill 1383, requires that all CA businesses and residents compost (compliance beginning last year). And the second, CA Assembly Bill 351, permits “green burial” and “human composting” in CA, starting in 2027. That will be handled in “green mortuaries,” creating the option of receiving mortal remains in the form of living soil.

And I was eager to talk to Baskerville, as she is not only an expert in compost but an entrepreneur looking to position herself in this new green burial industry with her Common Ground Soil Services.

Cincinnatus Hibbard: Britta, soil is not dead matter but a living sub-ecosystem…

Britta Leigh Baskerville: A teaspoon of healthy soil can hold around a billion living microbes and thousands of species working together to recycle nutrients, store carbon and retain water.

Amazing.

When we choose ecological death-care, the compost created doesn’t just honor the body; it becomes part of this living system. Returning to the soil in this way provides a gift back to the community: fertile, life-supporting earth that strengthens local ecosystems and nourishes new growth. Natural (ecological) burial is part of a beautiful ecological vision, in which we do away with carbon intensive crematoriums and polluted and wasteful cemeteries give way to memorial tree parks and gardens.

Ecological death-care is about returning to the earth in a way that nourishes life instead of polluting it, repairing our relationship with the earth, both in life and in death.

…What’s next for you and your Common Ground Soil Services?

…Right now, we’re fundraising to complete our certifications and lay the groundwork for a facility that will offer these services in the next two years. This is about creating a local, community-oriented option that is both environmentally

and spiritually meaningful.

How Buying Instagram Followers Works

Buying Instagram followers means using third-party services to add new accounts—real or automated—to your profile. These services come in different styles, prices and delivery methods, each affecting engagement and credibility in unique ways.

Types of Instagram Followers

Follower services usually offer three main categories:

TypeDescriptionEngagement Level
Bot or Fake FollowersAutomated accounts created in bulk.Very low
Inactive Real AccountsReal users who rarely post or interact.Low
Active or “Real” FollowersReal users who may engage occasionally.Moderate

Bot followers quickly boost your numbers. Inactive real accounts look more authentic but bring limited engagement. Active or “real” followers cost more, since they come from targeted marketing or incentive-based networks.

Payment and Delivery Process

Most follower services use online dashboards or mobile apps. You pick a package—usually between 500 and 10,000 followers—and provide your Instagram handle. Legitimate providers never ask for your password, since they add followers from the outside.

You’ll usually pay with a credit card, PayPal or cryptocurrency.
After payment, delivery starts almost right away or within a few hours. Some services spread out delivery over several days to make it look more natural.

New followers show up in batches, often with a quick boost at first. Reputable providers often include refill guarantees to replace any followers that drop off within a set period, so your numbers stay strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about how buying Instagram followers can help you grow? Check out these positive and benefit-focused answers to the most common questions.

How can buying Instagram followers help boost my profile’s visibility?

Buying followers gives your profile instant social proof, making it more likely for new visitors to trust and follow you. When people see a large, engaged following, they’re more likely to interact with your content and stick around—helping your posts reach even wider audiences organically.

Will purchased followers help me attract real engagement?

Absolutely! A higher follower count signals popularity and credibility, which often encourages genuine users to engage with your content. Many users report increased likes, comments, and shares after boosting their numbers, since people tend to follow what’s already popular.

Are these follower services easy to use?

Yes, the top platforms make the process simple. You just choose a package, enter your Instagram handle and pay securely—no password needed. Most services deliver followers quickly, sometimes within minutes, and offer tracking so you can watch your growth in real time.

Can I customize my follower growth to match my goals?

Definitely. Most providers offer a range of packages, so you can pick the amount and type of followers that fit your strategy. Whether you’re an influencer, business or creator, there’s a scalable option to match your marketing goals.

Is customer support available if I have questions?

Of course! Leading follower services offer responsive customer support, often 24/7, to answer any questions and help you get the most from your package. You can reach out anytime for help or advice on growing your profile.

Will my account stay secure when buying followers?

Yes, reputable services never ask for your password and use secure payment methods. Your account information stays private, and you’re always in control of your profile. Just stick with trusted providers, and you’ll enjoy peace of mind while you grow.

How can purchasing followers benefit my social media presence?

Buying followers can give your account a quick boost in numbers, making your profile instantly more attractive to new visitors. When people see a larger following, they’re often more likely to trust and engage with your content. Platforms like Instagram tend to highlight popular accounts, so increasing your follower count may help you catch the algorithm’s attention and reach new audiences.

Services that deliver high-quality followers can help you grow your community, especially if you’re just starting out or want to build momentum for a campaign.

How does buying followers enhance my account’s engagement and authenticity?

When you purchase followers from reputable sources, you can jumpstart your engagement by attracting more eyes to your posts. A larger follower base often encourages real users to join in, which can lead to higher interaction rates over time. Brands and audiences often associate higher follower counts with credibility and influence, so your account may appear more authentic and appealing.

This boost might even motivate you to produce more content and connect with your audience, strengthening your online presence.

Can buying followers help my account grow faster?

Absolutely. Buying followers can accelerate your growth, helping you reach milestones that might otherwise take months or years. Many users have seen their accounts flourish after a boost, as the increased numbers attract organic followers and spark more engagement. When your account looks active and popular, you’re more likely to be noticed by brands, collaborators, and new fans.

With the right approach, you can use this momentum to expand your reach and unlock exciting opportunities.

What features should I look for in a top-tier follower service?

Look for a service that values organic growth and offers complete transparency about how it sources its followers. Trusted names like Twicsy, Buzzoid, iDigic, Tokmatik and InstaPort consistently deliver real, engaged users. It’s smart to read customer reviews, check refund policies and make sure your privacy is protected—these are signs of a reliable provider.

Choosing the right service lets you focus on creating great content while your audience grows steadily.

How do I know if a follower service provides real value?

Genuine follower services prioritize authentic engagement and gradual, natural growth. They avoid instant spikes and instead help your account expand in a way that feels organic. If a service highlights active, real profiles and steady increases, that’s a good sign. Trusted providers also support their customers and deliver what they promise, so you can feel confident in your investment.

When you pick a service that aligns with your goals, you set yourself up for lasting success and a thriving online community.

What are the long-term impacts of having purchased followers on my social media presence?

When you purchase followers, your account instantly projects a larger, more influential presence. This boost can make your profile look impressive to new visitors and potential partners. Over time, you’ll notice that a higher follower count can open doors to exciting brand collaborations and networking opportunities, as many brands appreciate visible popularity and reach. It’s a great way to kickstart your social media journey and attract genuine engagement from people who are drawn to active, thriving accounts.

Disclaimer: Buying Instagram followers from unreliable or low-quality sources can seriously harm your account’s visibility and credibility. In many cases, accounts that purchase followers from questionable vendors risk shadow bans or reduced reach, meaning their posts no longer appear prominently in followers’ feeds or on discovery pages. To avoid that, it’s important to work with reputable providers who use safe, compliant methods to help grow your social presence.

All brands featured in this content have a proven history of offering legitimate Instagram marketing services. They’ve maintained long-term positive reputations with clients and, notably, there has never been a verified instance of an account being banned, suspended or otherwise penalized as a result of using their follower or like packages. Dancing, a new Sonoma-based company, is at once a wine label, but also a perfume brand, the connection between the two being a pursuit of sensory enjoyment. Co-owners Cynthia and Lauren Russell are a mother-daughter powerhouse team, bringing seriously impressive credentials to this shared pursuit, all about celebrating life, art and the flavors and aromas that dance among the beautiful Sonoma vines.

Amber Turpin: How did you get into this work?

Cynthia Russell: It’s been a journey. Between the two of us, we’ve spanned careers in finance, marketing and multiple startups. Covid changed everything. We were both at inflection points in our respective careers. And as with the world, we felt a cosmic shift in our priorities. We felt a strong urge to be a part of nature and farming as well and connect with family and friends in meaningful ways. So we bought a vineyard in Sonoma, CA.

Did you ever have an ‘aha’ moment with a certain beverage? If so, tell us about it.

Neither of us comes from a winemaking background or had an affinity for zinfandel, the predominant varietal in the region and what our historic vineyard has. Our aha moment is that the terroir does the majority of the talking. If you cultivate the land, you can make a wonderful product with minimal intervention.

What is your favorite thing to drink at home?

My dad makes a mean Negroni, which is usually our aperitif. Then, we always drink wine—the choice depends on the food and company. It’s always a group discussion and a trip down to the cellar to pour over the wine we’ve amassed over 30+ years collecting… We enjoy matching wines to a moment and exploring historic producers and emerging brands. We love small producers who push boundaries and explore new avenues of production and enjoyment.

Where do you like to go out for a drink?

Lauren Russell: I’m forever chasing the thrill of becoming a local at a bar in NYC—a Sisyphean feat at times. I live about two blocks from Altro Paradiso, which has a fantastic bar to both eat and drink at. Lately, I’ve been loving Smithereens in the East Village.

CR: Does my backyard count? It’s best in the late summer and early fall to sit outside with a book and a glass of wine, or light up a fireplace.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you want to be drinking (besides fresh water)?

LR: A nice chilled red would be lovely. Also, a pina colada for some added sustenance.

CR: Sparkling wine and rosé. I would want to feel alive, light and airy. It’s always so refreshing and joyful.

Your Letters, Oct. 29

Non-complacent

One of the most important books written in recent memory is On Tyranny, Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, by Timothy Snyder. In it, Snyder explains that we are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to facism, but our one advantage is that we can learn from their experience.

The U.S. military deployed to our city streets, prosecuting perceived enemies, masked men dragging people away in unmarked cars and sending them to undisclosed countries without due process . . . the Trump regime is not hiding their authoritarianism.

Snyder’s first lesson is: Do not obey in advance. He explains that most power in authoritarianism is freely given. A citizen who sits idly by is teaching power what it can do.

Californians have a unique opportunity to not obey in advance, and instead to stand up and say no to Donald Trump’s cruelty, lawlessness, corruption and authoritarianism. Vote yes on Prop 50 to take our power back and preserve our precious democracy. It’s an emergency, temporary action that is vital in this “break the glass” moment.

Detached

When I think of ICE offering a bounty on immigrant children, I think of the most important people in my life, my children, and how much I love them.

I wonder about those ICE agents and the politicians making these actions possible; do they think about their own children? It must take a lot of compartmentalizing to keep that from affecting them. Or maybe straight out denial. What a burden to carry.

Home Sweet Office: Ideas for Productivity and Comfort

Let’s face it—working from home in the North Bay means we’re as likely to share our “office” with a cat, a kombucha SCOBY and the sound of someone’s leaf blower as with a co-worker.

Yet somewhere between our artisan coffee habits and endless Zooms, the home office has quietly become one of the most important rooms in the house. Whether one is in a Sonoma bungalow or a mid-century Mill Valley manse, designing a workspace that actually works is an art form.

Here’s how to create one that balances productivity with the particular brand of comfort we’ve come to expect when not commuting over the Golden Gate.

Creative Corner

The first challenge of any home office is carving out space that feels distinct from the rest of one’s living area. It doesn’t need to be large—it just needs to be intentional. The goal is to create a boundary between “on the clock” and “off the clock,” even if that boundary is metaphorical.

In Sonoma County, where barns become studios and garages become production houses, creative repurposing is practically a regional sport.

One may consider converting a nook, an attic alcove or even a closet into a focused workspace. Built-ins, floating desks or compact modular furniture help define the zone. The trick is psychological: When one crosses into their workspace, the brain knows it’s showtime.

Light It Right

We live in one of the few places where light itself feels like a luxury brand. One must take advantage of that. Natural light boosts mood and energy, while reducing eye strain and the need for harsh overheads. A desk can be positioned near a window if possible—but not directly facing it.

One may complement daylight with warm, layered lighting: a good desk lamp for task work, ambient lighting for evenings and perhaps a touch of accent lighting to soften the mood. Think minimalist lines and organic materials. A reclaimed-wood desk paired with a LED fixture aptly captures a rustic-meets-refined vibe.

The Art of Quiet

Soundproofing is a form of self-care. Acoustic panels can double as art; thick rugs, curtains and fabric wall hangings absorb unwanted echo. A white-noise machine, or the gentle hum of a favorite Spotify playlist, can help mask distractions. Most streaming services offer various shades of noise playlists. One may try some pink noise, which can spur creative brainwaves, or brown noise for relaxation.

For those working near busy streets or in open-concept homes, adding door sweeps and weatherstripping can do wonders. And if one is fortunate enough to have outdoor space, they may consider a detached shed or backyard office pod. In the North Bay, even the smallest outbuilding can become a serene creative retreat, provided it’s wired, insulated and Wi-Fi friendly.

Design Meets the Body

It’s not glamorous, but ergonomics is the unsung hero of every well-designed office. A supportive chair is non-negotiable. Height-adjustable desks are worth the investment too, allowing one to alternate between sitting and standing.

Monitors should be at eye level; wrists should rest comfortably while typing; feet should touch the floor. If one’s office aesthetic leans bohemian, remember: Even the most beautiful rattan chair won’t compensate for poor posture.

Comfort doesn’t have to clash with design—many local furniture boutiques now offer ergonomic options that look as good as they feel.

Maintain Balance

Perhaps the most elusive part of home office design isn’t furniture or lighting—it’s boundaries. When one’s commute is 10 steps, it’s easy to never truly leave work.

The solution is ritual. One may consider lighting a candle to start the day, shutting down the laptop and playing music when they’re done. Work materials should be kept out of sight after hours. And one should make sure their space supports both focus and recovery. A small sofa, meditation cushion or even a view of one’s garden can remind them that their life extends beyond their labor.

In the end, a North Bay home office should feel like its owner: creative, comfortable and just a little bit aspirational. After all, this is where we dream up our next big idea, sip another pour-over and somehow make it all look effortless.
