Free Will Astrology: Week of Nov. 27

0

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Renowned composer Mozart had a sister nicknamed Nannerl. During their childhoods, she was as much a musical prodigy as he. They toured Europe doing performances together, playing harpsichord and piano. Some critics regarded her as the superior talent. But her parents ultimately decided it was unseemly for her, as a female, to continue her development as a genius. She was forcibly retired so she could learn housekeeping and prepare for marriage. Is there a part of your destiny, Aries, that resembles Nannerl’s? Has some of your brilliance been suppressed or denied? The coming months will be an excellent time to recover and revive it.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Do you know if you have any doppelgangers, Taurus? I bet you will meet one in the coming weeks. How about soul friends, alter egos or evil twins? If there’s no one like that in your life right now, they may arrive soon. And if you already know such people, I suspect your relationships will grow richer. Mirror magic and shadow vision are in the works! I’m guessing you will experience the best, most healing kind of double trouble. Substitutes and stand-ins will have useful offers and tempting alternatives. Parallel realities may come leaking through into your reality. Opportunities for symbiosis and synergy will be at an all-time high. Sounds like wild fun!

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Humans have been eating a wide range of oranges since ancient times. Among the most popular type in modern times is the navel orange. It’s large, seedless, sweet, juicy and easy to peel. But it didn’t exist until the 1820s, when a genetic mutation on a single tree in Brazil spawned this new variety. Eventually, the navel became a revolutionary addition to the orange family. I foresee a metaphorically comparable development in your life during the coming months, Gemini. An odd tweak or interesting glitch could lead to a highly favorable expansion of possibilities. Be alert for it.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian, you are a finalist for our “Most Resourceful and Successful Survivor of the Year” trophy. And if you take a brief trip to hell in the next two weeks, you could assure your victory. But wait! Let me be more exact: “Hell” is an incorrect terminology; I just used it for shock effect. The fact is that “hell” is a religious invention that mischaracterizes the true nature of the realm of mystery, shadows and fertile darkness. In reality, the nether regions can be quite entertaining and enriching if you cultivate righteous attitudes. And what are those attitudes? A frisky curiosity to learn truths you have been ignorant about, a brave resolve to unearth repressed feelings and hidden yearnings and a drive to rouse spiritual epiphanies that aren’t available when you’re in the trance of everyday consciousness.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In my astrological opinion, you need and deserve big doses of fun, play, pleasure and love. Amusement and enchantment, too. As well as excitement, hilarity and delight. I trust you will schedule a series of encounters and adventures that provide you with a surplus of these necessary resources. Can you afford a new toy or two? Or a romantic getaway to a sanctuary of adoration? Or a smart gamble that will attract into your vicinity a stream of rosy luck? I suggest that you be audacious in seeking the sweet, rich feelings you require.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): December will be Home Enhancement Month for you Virgos. Get started immediately! I’ll offer tips for how to proceed and ask you to dream up your own ideas. 1. Phase out décor or accessories that no longer embody the style of who you have become. 2. Add new décor and accessories that will inspire outbreaks of domestic bliss. 3. Encourage everyone in your household to contribute creative ideas to generate mutual enhancement. 4. Do a blessing ritual that will raise the spiritual vibes. 5. Invite your favorite people over and ask them to shower your abode with blessings.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran songwriter and producer Kevin MacLeod has composed over 2,000 pieces of music—and given all of them away for free. That’s why his work is so widespread. It has been featured in thousands of films and millions of YouTube videos. His composition, “Monkeys Spinning Monkeys,” has been played on TikTok over 31 billion times. (PS: He has plenty of money, in part because so many appreciative people give him free-will donations through his Patreon page.) I propose we make him your inspirational role model in the coming weeks and months, Libra. How could you parlay your generosity and gifts into huge benefits for yourself?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): According to my grandmother, I have such a mellifluous voice I should have pursued a career as a newscaster or DJ on the radio. In eighth grade, my science teacher admired my work and urged me to become a professional biologist. When I attended Duke University, my religious studies professor advised me to follow his path. Over the years, many others have offered their opinions about who I should be. As much as I appreciated their suggestions, I have always trusted one authority: my muses. In the coming weeks and months, Scorpio, you may, too, receive abundant advice about your best possible path. You may be pressured to live up to others’ expectations. But I encourage you to do as I have done. Trust your inner advisors.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I invite you to get a head start on formulating your New Year’s resolutions. January 1 is a good time to instigate robust new approaches to living your life, but the coming weeks will be an even better time for you Sagittarians. To get yourself in the mood, imagine you have arrived at Day Zero, Year One. Simulate the feeling of being empty and open and fertile. Imagine that nothing binds you or inhibits you. Assume that the whole world is eager to know what you want. Act as if you have nothing to prove to anyone and everything to gain by being audacious and adventurous.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): There was a long period when many popular songs didn’t come to a distinct end. Instead, they faded out. The volume would gradually diminish as a catchy riff repeated over and over again. As you approach a natural climax to one of your cycles, Capricorn, I recommend that you borrow the fade-out as a metaphorical strategy. In my astrological opinion, it’s best not to finish abruptly. See if you can create a slow, artful ebb or a gradual, graceful dissolution.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When he was young, Aquarian musician and sound engineer Norio Ohga wrote a critical letter to the electronics company now known as Sony. He complained in detail about the failings of their products. Instead of being defensive, executives at the company heeded Ohga’s suggestions for improvement. They even hired him as an employee and ultimately made him president of the company at age 40. He went on to have a stellar career as an innovator. In the spirit of the Sony executives, I recommend that you seek feedback and advice from potential helpers who are the caliber of Norio Ohga. The information you gather in the coming weeks could prove to be highly beneficial.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What would your paradise look and feel like? If you could remake the world to suit your precise needs for maximum freedom, well-being and inspiration, what changes would you instigate? Now is an excellent time to ponder these possibilities, Pisces. You have more ability than usual to shape and influence the environments where you hang out. And a good way to rouse this power is to imagine your ideal conditions. Be bold and vivid. Amuse yourself with extravagant and ebullient fantasies as you envision your perfect world.

Thanks for Giving, Volunteering for the Holidays

If the festive music playing in just about every store in Marin hasn’t signaled the fast-approaching holiday season as loud and clear as a Christmas carol, then let this be the official announcement declaring this year’s festivities are now in full swing.

The sun is setting sooner and sooner. The long nights grow longer and more cold. And, while many of Marin’s citizens are afforded the comforting luxury of anticipating hot soups to fill bellies and cozy nights inside to fill the soul, not all of those who call this county home are so lucky.

With Thanksgiving being the next holiday on the agenda, now is as good a time as any to consider not only turkey, stuffing and pies aplenty but also the friends and family who will share at the table and feast together through the night. No, Thanksgiving is about so much more than celebrating one’s own bounty…it is also about how one shares in one’s good fortunes with others. More simply, Thanksgiving is a holiday that invites everyone to ponder, express and spread the spirit of gratitude.

Gratitude, or giving thanks, is a never ending positive feedback loop—think of it as one continuous ouroboros of giving and instantaneously feeling good for it. Not all acts of generosity look the same, and that is precisely what makes every person’s contribution that much more valuable in the grand scheme of things.

While some people have time to spare but little money, others may have a whole lot of money but no extra time. And then there are those who have very little in the way of both. And wouldn’t it be nice if Marin and its citizens rallied extra hard this holiday season to spread the abundance to ensure that everyone ends the year with joy and good cheer?

So, whether one has an abundance of time, money, food, community spirit or some miscellaneous asset or skill to share, now is the time to do so. One may donate to a good cause, volunteer at a local non-profit, or dress up like a turkey, gobble at passersby and give the gift of laughter (an underrated but much-appreciated commodity).

There are many choices when it comes to whom and what causes to give to, and that alone can make one’s head spin a little bit. Is it best to give to a food bank? Or maybe a homeless shelter? But what about the children, education, the arts, puppies, kittens and bears (oh my)? When it comes to holiday philanthropy, it is best to give one’s all to a cause or two that truly pulls the heartstrings. Passion and compassion go hand in hand. It’s hard to go wrong when one pours all they have into something they genuinely care about; that’s when giving becomes the best feeling imaginable.

To help give everyone a headstart on getting into the Thanksgiving headspace is this non-comprehensive list of local non-profits and otherwise charitable organizations to consider giving to this holiday season. And don’t be afraid to let those creative juices flow and do something entirely and uniquely “you.” After all, the only person who knows best how to express abundance and gratitude is the person it belongs to. So, without further ado, it’s time to get giving.

Animals

Whether they be furry, feathered, scaley, wild, domesticated or otherwise, animals are a great cause to get charitable for this holiday season. From the deer wandering the wilds (and the roads when they really shouldn’t be) to the plethora of kittens just waiting to be adopted and cared for, Marin County has plenty of animals who would be grateful to receive help.

WildCare, for instance, is a fantastic non-profit that hospitalizes and rehabilitates local wildlife. Then there’s Marin Humane, whose hard work and dedication could always use a little love and support. West Marin Monarchs is doing their part to protect the butterflies. One can choose an animal, any animal, and look into giving them some TLC this holiday season.

Art

The local community loves its art and artists. As such, there are a whole lot of opportunities to give the gift of creativity for the holidays. Drawbridge, for instance, is a local nonprofit that connects children with supplies, lessons and even therapy through the arts. But that’s not the only nonprofit to consider…there’s also The Canal Arts, Headlands Center for the Arts, Art Works Downtown, MarinArts, Marin Society of Artists, Marin Cultural Association, Enriching Lives through Music and many more. So, one can get creative with charity this season and support the arts.

Kids & Education

Marin is a family-forward county. There are plenty of options for those who wish to give local children the gift of education, resources and opportunities to thrive through and after the holidays. Some places to consider supporting are Bridge the Gap, Schools Rule Marin, the Parent Services Project and Marin Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children. Or one could donate time, money and other resources to any/all of the local public libraries, which work tirelessly to give back to the local community year-round.

Food

While many of Marin’s citizens will spend Thanksgiving around a loaded table, enjoying the abundance of amazing dishes, others will face food insecurity. Not to sound like a retelling of The Little Match Girl, but if the fable fits…to share some abundance this season, one may consider donating to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank’s Nourishing Neighbors initiative. Or they may choose to get involved with North Marin Community Services, hands-on or otherwise. A small donation to one could be a giant gift to someone else. And that shift in perspective may make the difference between feast and famine to a local family.

Unhoused

It is easy to enjoy the cold weather of the North Bay’s autumn and winter from the comfort of one’s own home. But this year, some will spend the holidays without such a basic, inherently human commodity. Many are only a few misfortunes away from experiencing the same fate. And it is that fact that should facilitate empathy and, hopefully, action. To give perhaps the most priceless gift this Thanksgiving, one may consider donating shelter to those who have none through nonprofits like Homeward Bound of Marin, Homelessness in Marin, Community Action Marin and the Ritter Center.

Nature

One of Marin’s most notable features is its stunning swathes of nature. Decades, nigh on centuries, of hard work have gone into keeping the landscape this pristine. But there’s always more work to be done, between removing invasive species like broom to clearing trails or protecting the environment through leadership, legislature or picking up litter.

Organizations like the Marin County Parks Preservation and Recreation, Marin Conservation League, Conservation Corps North Bay, Sustainable Marin and the Marin Audubon Society may be considered. The list of ways to give back to Mother Earth here in Marin is almost never ending. So one must not dilly-dally or delay—getting started today and making a difference before the next holiday.

Gifts for Fashionistas

Put Bella on the list

Holiday shopping for the fashionista in one’s life can be a challenge. After all, gifting somebody a fashion-forward gift means understanding their style well enough to add to what is most likely an already well-curated and thought-out concept wardrobe.

Not to mention that one may have to consider potentially awkward questions to ask around the holidays—questions about sizing, body shape and perhaps even specifics like inseam, brassiere size, etc. Unless the fashionista is very open or close to the person giving the gift, it can feel like a bit of a gift-giving game of holiday-themed Minesweeper.

But one local boutique called Bella can and will sweep in and save the (holi)day. Since 1996, Bella has been a hotspot for helping dress Marin’s finest in top-notch items that complement, pop and otherwise delight fashionistas far and wide. This boutique is ideal for holiday shopping and has a wide selection of stunning items, accessories and more. Come on by and see if the staff can help find the absolute best gift for that fashionista on your shopping list.

For finding that perfect holiday gift for fashionistos, on the other hand, one should look no further than SONAS. This local and locally-owned boutique and its high-quality men’s apparel style play jump rope with the line between classic and edgy.

Gifts for Foodies

The West Marin Culture Shop

Foodies and vinophiles of Marin need one thing and one thing only for the holidays…well, maybe two things—good food and good wine. Although many places in Marin County cater to the taste buds of both bougie and bohemian alike, it can be hard to find the right gift that strikes that perfect balance to please any palate.

But in West Marin (downtown Point Reyes Station, to be more specific), there is a shop that has just about everything one could possibly need to make a wine-loving foodie go weak at the knees. That’s right; it’s time to take a nice, scenic drive out toward the coast and stop by to stock up on holiday gifts at the West Marin Culture Shop.

The West Marin Culture Shop has it all: wine, chocolate, perfectly fermented delights, fantastic books for foodies, cured meats, cheeses and enough miscellaneous items to stuff more than a few stockings. The selection available in the shop is beautifully curated and unpretentious without sacrificing quality. In other words, it’s hard to imagine a local foodie/vinophile not loving a culture shop holiday gift. Plus, Wild West Ferments operates in and with the West Marin Culture Shop; though remember that it is best to keep certain items like sauerkraut in the fridge rather than under a Christmas tree.

The West Marin Culture Shop is open Thursday through Monday from 11am to 5pm, located at 80 4th St. in Point Reyes Station. wildwestferments.com

Your Letters, 11/20

Super Villain

“He vowed vengeance—and sought it with a fiery passion—crisscrossing the galaxy, (he) collected a raging horde of interstellar malcontents—they became an army, paid in (his) booty and answerable only to his demonic snarls.” But he wanted more than that. He sought “the power to imprison all his foes with the slightest thought.”

As one of his minions told him, “Word of your return has spread throughout the stars. Every malcontent, pirate, merc, nihilist, psychotic and religious zealot in the galaxy is rushing to join your flock.”

These quotations describe the deadly Marvel villain, Thanos. I found them in the graphic novel entitled Marvel-Verse Thanos, and they are attributed to Marvel writer Jim Starlin. Or maybe you thought I was talking about Donald Trump?

David Madgalene

Quote-Gate

Peter Behel wonders how “nine guns trained on her” is free speech. It is because Donald Trump was not calling for Liz Cheney to be un-alived. What he said was, “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.” He was talking about sending our young men and women into war without as much skin in the game.

The video is there to see for yourself. This is how rumor, innuendo and gossip lost it for the Democrats this time around.

Fishwrap: The slow decline of the press

0

Over the last few months, there have been several stories about the sorry state of the Western press, especially in the United States.

While Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign was good for large cable news networks and to a lesser extent national periodicals like The New York Times, consolidation driven by profit-seeking had already deeply harmed smaller outlets, from televised local news broadcasts to small market newspapers.

At the same time, the hope of the early days of the internet, that access to information and diverse viewpoints from around the world would lead to a more educated public, has arguably led to the opposite. Most people now get their news from dubious sources like random posts on social media and streaming services like TikTok, where disinformation and misinformation is rampant.

One hope that has been held out for larger papers until recently is that billionaire owners can save them and that such noble philanthropists will allow these outlets to operate freely without putting their thumbs on the scale in terms of their coverage. The news that the owners of both The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times forced their editors to withhold endorsements during this year’s presidential election puts the lie to this.

It’s also been clear for quite some time that serious journalism, whatever its slant, will not be saved by online advertising; even well-funded outlets like Buzzfeed and, most recently, Messenger, that have attempted to mix news with content they hope will go viral haven’t found a way to survive using this already outdated model.

With help from Joe Rogan and others in the new media that increasingly has replaced journalism with (misinformed) opinion, American voters have returned Trump to The White House, hoping that a narcissistic billionaire will shake things up in Washington and improve their lives. Only time will tell if this will prove as lucrative for media of all stripes as it was last time around or if he will live up to his promise to go after those he has long called “enemies of the people.”

Marin Raw offers premium raw pet food and trustworthy treats

When purchasing a gift for a pet lover, the question looms—is the gift actually for the pet or its owner? This is a chicken-and-egg style quandary since the owner will likely be the one who receives, unwraps and expresses gratitude for the gift, but it’s the pet who will enjoy it. As with most issues in life, our philosophy is to “go low.” If you please the pet, you please the owner.

Among the local enterprises facilitating pet-themed gift-giving this season is Marin Raw, the brainchild of Elizabeth Davis. The San Anselmo shop is making tails wag with its commitment to revolutionizing pet nutrition. Inspired by her dog’s cancer diagnosis, Davis delved into raw feeding, sourcing fresh ingredients from local farmers’ markets. The results were transformative—and so was her journey. Armed with a certificate in canine nutrition and a pet food processing license, she launched Marin Raw, a company dedicated to species-appropriate, wholesome pet diets.

From a rented church kitchen to a bustling retail shop in San Anselmo, Marin Raw has become a haven for pet parents seeking high-quality, USDA-certified, human-grade ingredients. Davis’ products are rigorously inspected daily and free from chemicals, preservatives and high-pressure processing (HPP), ensuring every bite is as natural as it is nutritious.

Marin Raw offers an array of proteins—think chicken, duck, rabbit and more—alongside Grab-and-Go Discounted Boxes for convenience and savings. For the holidays, don’t miss bundles offering 40% off, a perfect gift for your furry friends.

Davis also provides free nutrition consultations so one can shop with confidence and see your pets thrive. Marin Raw isn’t just pet food—it’s a labor of love, making every meal a step toward better health.

Gifts for Stoners

Nice Guys Delivery…delivers

Obvious though it may be, that special stoner on your holiday shopping list would probably love nothing more than to receive the gift of, you probably already guessed it—weed.

You know…some pot, also known as ganja, the devil’s lettuce, grass, wacky tobaccy, Mary Jane, chronic, giggle smoke, that jolly green. Whatever name one uses to describe the reefer behind reefer madness, the point of all this is that flower, by any other name, would be a pretty sweet gift or stocking stuffer for a stoner.

Luckily, Nice Guys Delivery is more or less Marin’s own Stoner Santa. Just hop online, shop from their wide variety of products (smokable and otherwise) and then kick back and relax while the drivers bring the gift of cannabis right to one’s own front door. Although there won’t be any reindeer and absolutely no one will come down the chimney to deliver the gift of weed, Nice Guys Delivery really sleighs.

Those looking to truly delight the stoner in their life with the perfect holiday gift need only go online, shop and order delivery from the Nice Guys website at niceguysdelivery.com. Shop from indicas, sativas, flower, pre-rolls, accessories, edibles, CBD and a whole lot of other goodies. Note that gifting cannabis in California is only legal if the recipient in question is over the age of 21 and if the amount does not exceed one ounce.
