Earth Day Marin, Mill Valley Celebrates Our One Planet

If one were to judge the state of the planet solely by the daily news cycle, it would seem Earth is being managed by irate monkeys with flame throwers.

Fires, floods, record heat, governmental apathy and the general sense that humanity is headed toward extinction be damned. There is still a lot we can do, and dozens of local organizations are coalescing to show us what and how.

Returning for its fifth year, Earth Day Marin lands at the Mill Valley Community Center on Sunday, April 26, offering a bevy of options to help turn the tide. Presented by Green Change, the free gathering aims to turn climate anxiety into civic momentum with more than 50 green exhibits, live music, speakers, youth-led programming and enough practical inspiration to make doomscrolling feel tacky.

“Climate change is a serious challenge, but we know how to solve it: Replace fossil fuels with clean energy to cool the Earth,” says Green Change founder Fabrice Florin. “We are already making slow but real progress toward that goal.”

Florin argues the real missing ingredient is political will, and that community gatherings help generate it. “By coming together at events like Earth Day Marin, our communities get to learn about all the ways that we can save the Earth and save ourselves—and they get to do it in a joyful, hopeful manner,” he states.

Indeed, morale matters.

Born in 1970 as the modern environmental movement found its footing, the first Earth Day grew into what remains the world’s largest, secular civic demonstration. Today, more than 1 billion people mark the occasion worldwide, joining a broad environmental movement, according to global organizer EarthDay.org.

Throughout Earth Day Marin, visitors can browse exhibits from MCE Community Choice Energy, Good Earth Natural Foods and Resilient Neighborhoods; inspect new electric vehicles and e-bikes; hear live zydeco from Andre Thierry; and catch talks from civic and faith leaders including Damon Connolly. There will also be free ice cream courtesy of Straus Family Creamery, proving sustainability and dessert need not be opposing ideologies.

Perhaps most encouraging is the Youth Zone, where students from the Marin School of Environmental Leadership will exhibit their own green initiatives. Florin says younger generations deserve more than warnings.

“We owe future generations a livable planet—and our full commitment to do what it takes to protect it,” he says. “But we also owe them hope.”
