Dancing, a new Sonoma-based company, is at once a wine label, but also a perfume brand, the connection between the two being a pursuit of sensory enjoyment. Co-owners Cynthia and Lauren Russell are a mother-daughter powerhouse team, bringing seriously impressive credentials to this shared pursuit, all about celebrating life, art and the flavors and aromas that dance among the beautiful Sonoma vines.
Amber Turpin: How did you get into this work?
Cynthia Russell: It’s been a journey. Between the two of us, we’ve spanned careers in finance, marketing and multiple startups. Covid changed everything. We were both at inflection points in our respective careers. And as with the world, we felt a cosmic shift in our priorities. We felt a strong urge to be a part of nature and farming as well and connect with family and friends in meaningful ways. So we bought a vineyard in Sonoma, CA.
Did you ever have an ‘aha’ moment with a certain beverage? If so, tell us about it.
Neither of us comes from a winemaking background or had an affinity for zinfandel, the predominant varietal in the region and what our historic vineyard has. Our aha moment is that the terroir does the majority of the talking. If you cultivate the land, you can make a wonderful product with minimal intervention.
What is your favorite thing to drink at home?
My dad makes a mean Negroni, which is usually our aperitif. Then, we always drink wine—the choice depends on the food and company. It’s always a group discussion and a trip down to the cellar to pour over the wine we’ve amassed over 30+ years collecting… We enjoy matching wines to a moment and exploring historic producers and emerging brands. We love small producers who push boundaries and explore new avenues of production and enjoyment.
Where do you like to go out for a drink?
Lauren Russell: I’m forever chasing the thrill of becoming a local at a bar in NYC—a Sisyphean feat at times. I live about two blocks from Altro Paradiso, which has a fantastic bar to both eat and drink at. Lately, I’ve been loving Smithereens in the East Village.
CR: Does my backyard count? It’s best in the late summer and early fall to sit outside with a book and a glass of wine, or light up a fireplace.
If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you want to be drinking (besides fresh water)?
LR: A nice chilled red would be lovely. Also, a pina colada for some added sustenance.
CR: Sparkling wine and rosé. I would want to feel alive, light and airy. It’s always so refreshing and joyful.
