Modern Heads

For Jerry Harrison, the more things change, the more they rock

Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads and the Modern Lovers returns to the Bay Area to play cuts from the classic Brian Eno-produced Headsโ€™ album Remain in Light. Playing with longtime contributor Adrian Belew, former frontman for King Crimson, the band plays songs from the album along with past and present solo work.

The live showsโ€”and I have seen themโ€”present two masters of New Wave rock, delivering the ethos of punk with the polish of mastery. The band call themselves โ€œRemain in Lightโ€ after the groundbreaking album.

With a unique talent for finding the other rhythms of the modern guitar, Harrison never was a guitar playerโ€”until he was.

Although he took piano lessons as a kid, Harrison asserted that he was not very good at it. Even as he played keyboards for proto-punk legends the Modern Lovers, he never โ€œtried to pick up the styles of well-known keyboard players,โ€ said Harrison. โ€œI basically just took the knowledge I have from playing music and just sort of made stuff up.โ€

By that, Harrison means a long career of playing rhythmically layered counterpoint to great signers, playing original, provocative music on both keyboards and guitar.

โ€œI ended up playing keyboards very much as if I was playing guitar parts, like a chord or something like that. When I started playing guitar, I wasnโ€™t really good,โ€ admits Harrison, โ€œbut I think those parts are how I learned how to play, so that’s how I did it.โ€

โ€œWhen I started playing with Talking Heads, I very much saw myself in this role as providing support,โ€ he added. โ€œSort of taking what David was playing, seeing what Tina was playing and finding ways to complement and reinforce what they were doing.โ€

There was plenty to complement and reinforce in the Talking Heads, especially on Remain in Light. Produced by new wave and ambient music god Brian Eno, the album was his third collaboration with the band.

Although Eno was not originally interested in producing a third Talking Heads album, he changed his mind when he heard the band’s new direction in early demos.

Influenced by the 1973 Nigerian album Afrodisiac by Fela Kuti, Remain in Light was one of the earliest albums to incorporate the โ€œworld musicโ€ sound into American pop music.

The band decided to go into the studio without any songs written. They took a modal approach, allowing each player to explore the sounds of their instrument to build up a co-created song.

โ€œWe were already excited about African music, this idea that people would go out and just play one part for, you know, six minutes,โ€ said Harrison, and โ€œthe compositions would come together through the use of the mixing board and like muting and turning things on and off.โ€

It all came off in the albumโ€™s droning meta-rhythms holding each other up to support the rants and chants of vocalist David Byrne, a layered rhythm that helped to define the sound of 80s pop music. For many, it is their favorite Talking Heads albumโ€”mine are Little Creatures, then Fear of Music, then 77. But really Remain in Light is the highly revered masterpiece that changed it all.

Harrison and Belew have been bringing the album back to the stage as โ€œRemain in Lightโ€ since 2021. After a tour in winter of โ€˜23 and spring of โ€˜24, the current free show at the China Basin Park is part of the Noise Pop SF Live! series, an initiative to bring free, all ages indie music to streets of San Francisco.

It started just before punk

โ€œYou know, bands like Yes, the Electric Light, Orchestra, all these, โ€ฆ you know โ€ฆ,โ€ Harrison tastefully declined to finish his sentence, but we are talking about prog rock here, and stadium rock, all the things that 70s punk was a reaction too, whether by being louder and faster like the Ramones, who Harrison and the Heads opened for on their massively influential โ€˜77 European tour, or with the conceptually minimal sound of the early Talking Heads.

Speaking on the proto-punk status of his earlier band, Harrison said, โ€œThere’s this chain that starts with the Velvet Underground to the Stooges, and the Modern Lovers are next in line.โ€

All those bands shared a distaste for endless soloing and the generally ornate character of blues-steeped early 70s rock.

โ€œDefinitely what we did with the Modern Lovers is we said, โ€˜No, we want short sweet songs. They grab your attention. Also the ethos of punk has always been, โ€˜I may not be a very good technician or I may have just picked up this guitar a week ago but I’m going to find some way to express my frustration or my whatever, this emotion I’m trying to express right now with the means that I have right now.โ€

CDs Messed Up Music

A lot has been written and muttered about the effect of streaming on music artists, but Harrison remembers an unintended consequence of CDs that had a huge effect on the quality of music coming out of the big studios.

โ€œBecause CDs could be 72 minutes long, everybody started to make a double album,โ€ recalled Harrison. โ€œOn the other hand, there was a sense, โ€˜Well, if you’ve only got half of what could fit on the CD, are you being ripped offโ€™ because a 72-minute CDโ€ โ€” โ€œThe Cure anyone?โ€ I interrupt โ€” โ€œand a 29-minute CD would sell for the same price.โ€

Vinyl LPs of the time topped out at 23 minutes per side. Anything over 46 minutes back then required a double album. โ€œIt meant that it got longer and longer between when everybody released albums,โ€ said Harrison.

โ€œI’m happy that the Talking Heads went through the period where people were [releasing] an album roughly once a year. Your audience then expected you to change, and the idea that if you did something that sounds really a lot like your last album, it would just be a disappointment,โ€ he added.

The Talking Heads were one of the biggest bands in the world when the CD’s emergence occurred, and Remain in Light remains their masterpiece. Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew keep the heart of punk alive in a show that will delight anyone who loves music.

Jerry Harrison and Arian Belew perform Remain in Light 1pm Saturday August 17 at China Basin Park, San Francisco. Free, all ages.

Best Way to Celebrate the โ€˜Best of Marinโ€™

Try the Pacific Sunโ€™s โ€˜Best of Marinโ€™ edition

In the midst of the drama that is 2024โ€”election thrills and chills, Olympic feats and the daily chaos we call lifeโ€”weโ€™re taking a moment to celebrate something equally compelling to locals: more than six decades delivering the news, toasting local talent and generally making sense of Marinโ€™s delightful quirks.

This year, weโ€™ve faced political theatrics worthy of a soap opera and global spectacles that have us glued to our screens. Yet through it all, weโ€™ve remained the countyโ€™s faithful chroniclers, capturing the essence of Marin with a wink and a nodโ€”and, as often, a tongue planted in cheek. The loss of Cyra McFadden, the brilliant satirist behind our critically-lauded โ€™70s play at fiction, The Serial, reminded us of this paperโ€™s rich, humorous legacy and suggests a way we may consider going forward.

Basically, old is the new new. Because, in a word, Marin is a classic.

As these things go, writers usually precede readers. So it was with great esteem that I brought in my unusual suspects to produce the introductions to each of our Best of Marin sections. Special thanks are in order for Isabella Cook, Kary Hess, Desmond Howell and Ada Ionesco. The rest, however, is all you, dear readersโ€”your votes, your voice, your Marin.

Stewarding this beloved Marin institution is one of my greatest honorsโ€”or career gaffes. Dunno; the jury is still out. But itโ€™s our readers who truly make it special โ€ฆ and then make me special with their, ahem, very creative letters to the editor. The communityโ€™s engagement, passion and support are what make the Pacific Sun and Marin County the best. Hereโ€™s to another year of celebrating the magic and madness of Marin.

No F***ing Merlot!

The Rafael Hosts a 20th Anniversary Screening, Wine Tasting, and Book Signing of โ€˜Sidewaysโ€™ with Author Rex Pickett

Itโ€™s time to raise a glass and toast one of the cultural touchstones of our eraโ€”Sideways, the beloved film about romantic contretemps in wine country, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. In its honor, the Smith Rafael Film Center hosts a celebratory screening, wine tasting, and book signing tonight with its author, Rex Pickett.

Quick refresher: The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcรฉ and would-be novelist with a wine fixation, decides to gift old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with a celebratory trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley the week before Jackโ€™s wedding. Emotional chaos ensues.

Directed by Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt), the film changed the landscape of wine culture forever (particularly for producers of the famously and unfairly maligned merlot varietal) and the life of the author on whose book it was based. Though fiction, Rex Pickett poured much of his own experience into Sideways, particularly the character of Miles, whose experiences are inspired by his own (including various memorable tasting room moments as depicted in the adaptation). He showed his ex-wife. Her advice? โ€œBurn it.โ€

โ€œShe just thought it was too personal. โ€˜Why would you want to do something so personal? It’s just going to ruin your career.โ€™ Of course, I laugh because [at the time] I didnโ€™t have a career, so howโ€™s it going to ruin my career?โ€ recalls Pickett with a laugh. โ€œBut you have to be willing to take those risks. And when they pay off like this and it’s still remembered, I like to think now that the pain and anguish was worth it.โ€

The machinations of the publishing industry, let alone the film industry, can be glacial, but through a series of small miracles, the manuscript landed in the hands of director Alexander Payne, who could see the film within its pages. In 2004, the film and book were widely released.

Sideways became a cultural force and spurred intense interest in pinot noir, as well as a 2009 Japanese adaptation of the film, a musical in the works, myriad staged versions (one is currently going up in Latvia), and a handful of sequel novels by Pickett that continue the wine-soaked odyssey.

Despite its enduring success, Pickett doesnโ€™t think Sideways would be greenlit these days. โ€œI think it’s too unique and original,โ€ he says, pointing to a box office culture driven more by spandex and existing intellectual property than seriocomic yarns for grownups. โ€œIt’s a very autobiographical work. It’s very personal.โ€

And as they say in creative writing workshops, the personal is universalโ€”hence the embrace of Pickettโ€™s story over the past two decades.

โ€œItโ€™s a fickle world. It can drive you crazy,โ€ Pickett says of the writing game. โ€œSo to have something endure and be here 20 years later brings tears to my eyes, quite frankly.โ€

The Smith Rafael Film Center hosts a prescreening tasting, courtesy of Moshin Winery & Mill Creek Winery, at 6 pm, followed by an introduction and screening at 7 pm, Wednesday, Aug. 14. Tickets are $14 for general admission, $10.50 for seniors, and $8.50 for CAFILM members.  The film center is located at 1118 Fourth St., San Rafael. More info and tix here.

Redefining Orthopedic Care: Dr. Robert Purchaseโ€™s Innovative Techniques and Compassionate Approach to Medicine

Sponsored content by Purchase Orthopedic Clinic

pacific sun best of marin 2024

Dr. Robert Purchase of The Purchase Orthopedic Clinic aims to break the stereotype about excellent surgeons with bad bedside skills. With a holistic approach to sports medicine, he emphasizes the importance of listening, engaging and educating patients so that they can receive the best possible care tailored to their individual needs and goals.

At Purchase Orthopedic Clinic, each patientโ€™s physical and mental well-being is taken into account in a supportive environment where minimally invasive techniques are prioritized and the potential of new surgical procedures or emerging treatments like PRP are continually explored.

A Journey into Orthopedic Surgery

The path to orthopedic surgery and sports medicine wasnโ€™t an obvious one for Dr. Purchase. As an undergraduate, he pursued his interest in biology but didnโ€™t consider a pre-med track until an advisor recognized his potential in medicine and encouraged him to expand his horizons.

As a college football player who sustained his share of injuries, he decided to shadow the team doctor. This internship ignited a passion for orthopedics but, even then, it wasnโ€™t until his third year of medical school that he discovered his natural and intuitive affinity for musculoskeletal medicine.

This, combined with hands-on experience in various clinical settings helped the future Dr. Purchase recognize the importance of listening to and understanding his patients needs beyond what appears on the X-ray.

purchase orthopedic clinic

Listen, Engage, Educate

But listening to his patients isnโ€™t just about cultivating a good bedside manner. Dr. Purchase understands that being heard and understood is an integral part of the healing process. Thatโ€™s why he takes time to understand his patientsโ€™ physical and mental health, enabling him to focus on listening to the patientโ€™s story.

A patient may have been dealing with their condition for weeks or months before finally seeing the doctor. By taking the time to listen, Dr. Purchase honors their experience and builds a foundation of trust and empathy. His patient-centered approach involves engaging with patients, educating them about their condition, and involving them in their treatment plans.

This holistic approach not only addresses the physical aspects of an injury but also considers the emotional and psychological well-being of the patient.

Minimally Invasive Techniques and Advancements

Dr. Purchase employs minimally invasive techniques for treating injuries. This offers numerous benefits, including reduced recovery times, less post-operative pain and smaller scars. Minimally invasive procedures allow for quicker recovery and enables patients to return to their normal activities sooner.

Dr. Purchase stays current with the latest advancements in surgical techniques and integrates them into his practice to provide the best care possible.

He was an early adopter of the reverse shoulder replacement, a total shoulder procedure he has been performing since it was first adopted in the US. He also has an excellent track record of repairing rotator cuff tears, even rather large ones. And Dr. Purchase is proud of his ability to discern which patients would benefit from surgery and which would not. The doctors he admired most in training taught me that a truly great surgeon knows when to operate and when not to, so he takes pride in only offering surgery to patient who will truly benefit.

Heโ€™s excited about the potential of molecular medicine and injectables like PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and stem cells.

Though the indications and efficacy of these treatments are still being explored, they represent the future of orthopedic care, focusing on enhancing the bodyโ€™s natural healing processes. Dr. Purchase is particularly interested in how these emerging treatments complement traditional surgical approaches and offer patients a range of options for their recovery.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Dr. Purchase is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for his patients. Itโ€™s a commitment thatโ€™s deeply personal as his wife and daughter are both cancer survivors. His experience as a caregiver gave him a profound understanding of patient vulnerability and the need for advocacy.

He strives to ensure that the Purchase Orthopedic Clinic is a place where patients feel safe, supported and empowered to take an active role in their treatment plans. By viewing patients’ physical injuries holistically and with a heavy dose of compassion, Dr. Purchase helps patients find the right balance between their physical limitations and their desire to remain active.

Recovery is not just about physical healing but also about rebuilding confidence and resilience. His empathetic approach helps patients navigate the emotional challenges that often accompany physical injuries.

Balancing Professional and Personal Life

Self care is essential to providing the best care for others. This is why Dr. Purchase tried to maintain a balance between professional responsibilities and personal life so he can always bring his whole self to the clinic.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Purchase aims to continue integrating advancements in orthopedic surgery with a holistic approach to patient care. He is passionate about empowering patients to make informed choices about their health to help them maintain an active lifestyle.

His dedication to patient-centered care, combined with his expertise in minimally invasive techniques and emerging treatments, makes Purchase Orthopedic Clinic a leader in the field. Dr. Purchase is particularly excited about the potential of personalized medicine in orthopedics. Advances in genetic research and biomaterials hold strong promise for the development of treatments tailored to individual patients’ needs. By staying at the forefront of these developments, Dr. Purchase ensures that his patients receive cutting-edge care that addresses their unique conditions.

In a healthcare landscape where patients can feel rushed and unheard, Dr. Robert Purchaseโ€™s approach is unique and a relief to new patients. His commitment to listening, engaging, and educating his patients ensures that they receive the best possible care, tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. At Purchase Orthopedic Clinic, itโ€™s not just about treating injuries; itโ€™s about understanding and supporting the whole person. Through his patient-centered philosophy and dedication to innovation, Dr. Purchase continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of his patients.
