Bread Head—A Freshly Baked Gluten Free Bread Guide

Few things match the joy and satisfaction of biting into a slice of freshly baked bread—especially the kind of bread that makes us feel like all of our annoyingly lucky gluten-eating friends.

This is why it is one of my missions in life to stay up to date on where to get great freshly baked gluten-free bread. We’ve got quite a few delicious freshly baked options here in Sonoma and Marin County though, and I want to share every single one of them.

Mama Mel’s Gluten Free Bakery

Baguettes, boules, sourdough, sandwich bread, bagels, dinner rolls and ciabatta are on the menu at Mama Mel’s.

Pre-order loaves—or any kind of bread they offer—via their website twice a month and pick the order up at their Petaluma bakery or at their booth at the Santa Rosa Community Farmers’ Market on one of their pre-scheduled dates.

Buy their fresh-frozen loaves at Community Market in Sebastopol, Woodland Market in Kentfield and at Green Valley Farm.

431 Payran St., Warehouse C, Petaluma. 707.595.0980. Only open on designated pick-up dates.

Grindstone Bakery

Grindstone bakes up hearty and wholesome gluten-free breads from 100% stone-ground grains such as millet and quinoa. No preservatives or gums, just grains! This wholesome bakery also makes breads that are not gluten-free (they have two separate kitchens for their baking). The Rohnert Park bakery is open to the public Monday and Thursday from noon–5pm.

500 Martin Ave., Rohnert Park. 707.888.9026. Open Monday and Thursday from noon–5pm.

Flour Chylde Bakery

Flour Chylde Bakery in Novato has specialized in gluten-free baked goods since 2002. Their fresh breads include baguettes, boules, several kinds of sliced sandwich bread, focaccia and hamburger buns.

Their Novato bakery is open to the public Monday through Saturday. They can also be found at the Marin Civic Center Farmers’ Market on Thursdays and Sundays, and at the Santa Rosa Luther Burbank Center Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

850 Grant Ave., Novato. 415.893.7700, ext. 2. Open Monday, 9am to 2pm; Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 4pm; closed Sunday.

Flourcraft Bakery and Cafe

This 100% gluten-free bakery and cafe has two locations in Marin County—one in Mill Valley and one in San Anselmo. Both serve up amazing gluten-free fare—from avocado toast and other plant-based dishes to pastries and espresso beverages—for pick-up, or dine-in at their outdoor tables. They also offer seeded baguettes, sliced sandwich bread—with a grain-free option—focaccia and brioche.

Flourcraft’s freshly baked breads and other products can be purchased at their Mill Valley or San Anselmo bakery locations.

702 San Anselmo Ave., San Anselmo. 415.453.3100. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 8am to 3pm.

129 Miller Ave. #300, Mill Valley. 415.384.8244. Open Monday to Thursday, 8am to 3pm; Friday to Sunday, 8am to 4pm.

Goguette Bakery

Goguette isn’t a gluten-free bakery, but baker-owner Nas Salamati offers special levain-based gluten-free loaves, made from a blend of his own in-house stone-milled flours, on Thursdays and Saturdays. The two types of gluten-free loaves that Goguette currently offers are large seeded loaf—made with stone-milled rice flours and sorghum—and a chocolate orange-zest loaf—made without any egg whites, gums or stabilizers. Note that the types of bread offered change regularly.

Purchase Goguette’s freshly baked gluten-free breads Thursdays and Saturdays at their bakery from 1:30–6pm. Order online (email or Instagram messaging preferred for queries).
